Lycoming announces new piston manufacturing capability
If there's one thing any company needs to be the Power of Choice in piston general aviation, it's as simple as this: pistons. After launching its own one-of-a-kind fully automated piston manufacturing line, Lycoming has provided another reason to be the Power of Choice.
Ceremonially opened May 26, 2010 before a crowd that included local dignitaries, Textron officials and every Lycoming employee, the new piston manufacturing capability combines state-of-the-art robotic precision with unequalled quality control.
“Our commitment to relentless improvement in every aspect of our operations put us in position to bring the manufacture of this critical component back in-house," said Michael Kraft, Lycoming Senior Vice President and General Manager. "We now have a world-class piston manufacturing capability to go with our class-leading achievements in safety, quality and delivery.”
Said Textron Systems President Fred Strader: “In the past few years, Lycoming has made it easy to decide to invest in its team with a multi-million dollar system.”
Textron Systems President and CEO Fred Strader addresses nearly 500 Lycoming employees, local dignitaries and others as Lycoming launches its new piston manufacturing capability.
The equipment was designed by Cosworth of England, best known for its Formula One racing expertise, and manufactured by Takisawa of Japan. Automated quality checks are performed between each step in the manufacturing process, as well as at the completion of the production cycle. In addition, every fifth piston is inspected manually.
The system is capable of producing more than enough pistons to meet Lycoming's annual need. Most importantly, the system fits well with Lycoming's continued focus on relentlessly improving customer response times, permitting it to directly ensure support for the Lycoming powered general aviation community
