Lycoming launches another successful Oshkosh On the opening day of EAA Airventure 2009, Senior Vice President and General Manager Ian Walsh announced the iE2, Lycoming's breakthrough integrated electronic propulsion system, had flown to Oshkosh from Redmond, Wash. Thus begins a new era for piston-powered aviation in general and Lycoming Engines in particular. Sun 'n Fun marks another success for Lycoming Sunny and hot. It's more than just a description of the weather for this year's Sun 'n Fun fly-in in Lakeland, Fla. It describes Lycoming's outlook and products heading into the 2009 aviation season in North America. Lycoming flies into Aero Friedrichshafen 2009 Friedrichshafen, Germany - Lycoming flew into Aero Friedrichshafen 2009 - the largest air show in Europe - to show off its iE2 integrated electronic engine and its soon to be certified IO-233-LSA light sport engine. It's the debut in Europe for the engines that were the talk of EAA Airventure in Oshkosh, Wis., in July 2008. History Made at Reno by Jon Sharp and Lycoming Jon Sharp did it again. He won a third straight Gold National Championship in the Super Sport Class at the 2008 Reno Air Races. Lycoming Displays New Products and Technology at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2008, billed as "The World's Greatest Aviation Celebration," was indeed great for Lycoming Engines. Cessna Cardinal 177RG Powerplant Upgrade STC The Cessna Cardinal RG, the final design in the 177 family, was introduced to the marketplace in Model Year 1971. The aircraft featured a cantilever wing, large doors for easy entry, retractable landing gear and a Lycoming powerplant. Today, the many Cardinal RG's still flying are classics and have become very desirable ships to own. Lycoming's Certified IO-390 Series Engine The growl of the engine being put through its paces on the "Dyno" was impressive. When the testing of this new, soon-to-be-certified Lycoming IO-390 was completed, I got the thumbs-up that the performance numbers were validated and the engine performed as expected. I decided that the story of the 390 Series engine's journey to certification had to be told. Along with the discoveries of fire, pointy sticks and standing on hind legs, our prehistoric ancestors figured out that when it was time to rearrange the furniture, rolling rocks around was a lot easier than dragging them, and so the wheel was invented. Through several decades as an FBO in Queensland, Don Adams, founder and Chairman of Seabird Aviation Australia, observed that in typical operations many helicopter operators require the helicopter’s visibility and slow-flight characteristics but not a its vertical take-off and landing capability. Lycoming-sponsored racer Jon Sharp, in his Nemesis NXT design, won the 2007 Reno Air Races Super Sport Class division Gold Race. It was a one-two punch for turbo-charged Lycoming Thunderbolt engines and the NXT design as Kevin Eldredge made an impressive second place finish in the same race in the NXT Relentless. "You're flying very fast, around 260 miles per hour often only 10 – 20 feet off the water, and you're doing these outrageous things with your plane. If we weren't highly experienced, it wouldn't take much of a mistake to kill us."... Lycoming-Powered Nemesis NXT Wins at Reno Air Races ...“We were on the ground for a full fifteen minutes. We had to keep quiet and hold everything in because we weren’t sure if the judges had seen the lead plane cut the course,” said Sharp. He explains that there are no video cameras documenting the ten-minute race so, judges rely solely on their vision. “They stand on the ground and look 50 feet up the pylon (made from a telephone pole with a marker barrel on top).” Sharp and his team knew there was a chance the judges had missed it...
