Lycoming’s New Advanced Technology Center and Thunderbolt Engines
In early 2005, Ian Walsh, Senior Vice President and General manager of Lycoming Engines, made a commitment to Lycoming’s customers and to the general aviation community, stating,
“At Lycoming Engines, a Textron Company, the new generation engine for general aviation aircraft is a race to combine proven technology enhancements with innovative designs for the industry’s most reliable performer, the reciprocating engine.”
In fulfillment of that commitment, Lycoming Engines created the Advanced Technology Center in the Lycoming facility in Williamsport. Pennsylvania. The Advanced Technology Center, or ATC, is a center of excellence for aviation engine research and development. As an operating unit of Textron Systems, a provider of advanced technology and innovative solutions that meet the needs of the defense and aerospace industries, Lycoming’s ATC is tied into Systems’ ASC (Advanced Solutions Center) and shares its focuses, giving top priority to product development, advanced technology, and innovation.
The ATC is researching systems like electronic fuel controls, materials and components, structure, design, and performance, all with goal of stepping up and forward, enhancing the established Power of Choice with more power and more choices.
The people, processes and performance behind ATC’s research and innovation will produce new and exciting developments, and when those developments yield solutions that meet the needs of the non-certified engine market, Lycoming can fill those needs with Thunderbolt Engines, the mechanism and brand that directly answer the voice of the customer. Thunderbolt Engines will often be able to incorporate the Advanced Technology Center’s proven innovations.
