The Zeppelin NT 07
A Legend Redefined
A hundred years ago, the rare event of a passing aircraft turned all eyes skyward. People rushed out of their homes, pulled over their vehicles, and stopped their work to watch in awe. Today, we are so accustomed to air traffic, that we barely pay attention to its familiar sights or sounds.
There is, however, one spectacular exception; no one takes an airship for granted. The distinctive shape, the impressive size, and the graceful maneuvering of a Zeppelin is that majestic.
Over A Century Of Experience
Ferdinand von Zeppelin (1838-1917), cavalry general, diplomat, and airship pioneer, began the development of rigid airships in 1890. The company founded by Count Zeppelin still exists today as ZLT Zeppelin Luftschifftechnik GmbH & Co KG and has been able to open new international markets in the airship manufacturing sector, thanks not only to its wealth of experience but also to its innovative concepts.
Modern Technology
ZLT Zeppelin Luftschifftechnik GmbH & Co KG, combining practical experience and modern high technology, is now producing the Zeppelin NT, a sophisticated, agile, semi-rigid airship labeled NT for the new technologies in its design, structure, and control system.
The Zeppelin NT has a semi-rigid framework of aluminium and carbon-fibre frames and longerons. The engines, empennages and the cabin are mounted directly to this internal structure, ensuring that the Zeppelin NT offers the highest levels of safety, comfort and performance.
With a length of 75m (246ft) and a volume of 8,450m³, the Zeppelin NT 07 is the largest semi-rigid airship in the world. In fact, it is among the largest aircraft of any kind.
Powered by Lycoming
With its own proud heritage and the experience of building over 325,000 aircraft engines, Lycoming was the natural Power of Choice for the airship. Three independent 200-horsepower Lycoming IO-360 engines deliver reliable power and performance for the Zeppelin NT 07. The two lateral engines are equipped with tilting propellers that can be turned upward or downward. The rear engine has a tilting pushing propeller as well as an additional lateral steering propeller that can be directed to the side.
The unique propulsion concept gives the airship a high degree of maneuverability. The Zeppelin NT can hover, turn on the spot, and has virtually vertical take-off and landing capability. The airship is easy to control during landing and takeoff and requires only a minimal ground crew of three, in contrast to the crowd previously associated with the ground handling of an airship.
The cockpit is equipped with state-of-the-art avionics and full computer-controlled, fly-by-wire flight controls. Because the engines are mounted directly to the internal structure, the cabin remains free of vibration, and noise-levels are very low, offering maximum comfort during flight.
Versatility
The Zeppelin NT has been designed as a multi-mission airship, ideal for the tourism, advertising and special mission sectors. The special flight characteristics of the Zeppelin NT 07 have opened a new dimension in gentle and exclusive aerial tourism. During several special missions, the NT 07 has also proven its capabilities for such applications as surveillance flights, homeland security, mineralogical exploration, and atmospheric research. Sports fans everywhere will recognize the NT 07 as a floating prestige billboard and a true crowd-pleaser as it is used more and more frequently as a highly efficient event and media platform for the live broadcasting of both picture and sound.
A maximum flight altitude of 2,800m (9185ft) and the unique flight performance combined with a flexible cabin lay-out and the ability to remain aloft continuously for a full day and night all contribute to Zeppelin NT’s success.
Experience and Innovation
The Zeppelin NT responds to our fascination with airships by offering a true “aircraft of the future” built with modern technology and materials, but still reflecting a long and noble history and retaining the distinctive characteristics that have pulled our gaze skyward for more than a century.
