Thunderbolt Engines by Lycoming

Detailed Build Overview

Lycoming Thunderbolt engines are direct-drive, horizontally opposed, with a wet-sump. Cylinders are conventional air-cooled construction with aluminum-alloy cast heads and a fully machined combustion chamber. Cylinder barrels are machined from chrome molybdenum steel forgings with deep integral cooling fins, ground and honed to a final specified finish -- Nitrided ID finish, Black Oxide exterior finish. Cylinder heads are a combination of permanent mold and sand-cast aluminum alloy. Crankshaft, camshaft, and connecting rods are forged steel.

Standard Thunderbolt engine features include spin-on oil filter adapter, Slick ignition system, and fuel system. The engine fuel system consists of a mechanical fuel pump (most models) and either carburetor or fuel injection system. Carburetors are new Volare units. On injected engines, customers may choose Airflow Performance or Precision Airmotive systems. Injection systems include servo, flow divider, injector lines, and nozzles. In addition, the Airflow Performance FM-200 system includes a purge valve. The standard ignition system consists of (1) Slick impulse coupled magneto, (1) Slick direct drive magneto, sparkplug harness, and sparkplugs. Engine accessories such as vacuum pump, starter, and alternator are not included. The standard color is Thunderbolt Titanium.
